Move to Boston, Winter 2001
In November of 2001, Karen and I packed up and moved from Austin, TX to Boston, MA. The Austin economy, including my employer, was particularly hard-hit by the recession. Trilogy struggled through 3 rounds of layoffs, ultimately falling from a peak of 1500 employees down to about 430.
We would have been happiest to stay in Austin. But after a job search that lasted about 2 months, we decided that my best opportunity was in Boston with i2. So we packed everything up, rented out our new house, and made the move.
It has been a big adjustment, to say the least. But Karen is finding that there is a lot she likes about the city, we have made new friendships and revitalized old ones, and if things get too hectic we can always flee to Maine.

| Everything gets packed up. Max has to stay in the crate for his own peace of mind. It disturbs him to see everything being shipped out. |

Karen is sad to be leaving her house, but happy with the choice that we've made.

The Trip
We took about 7 days to drive from Austin to Boston, stopping in Kansas City along the way. We stayed in Residence Inns in every town, because we knew they accepted pets. Max did not like spending nights in motels; all the activity around the unfamiliar room made him jittery and barky.
Every time we entered a new state, we rolled Max's window down so that he could smell the new state smells. Unfortunately he grew tired of this tradition as the trip rolled on, and on. By the time we reached Connecticut he barely bothered to roust himself from his tucked position on his bed in the back seat.
As we crossed the Mississippi it finally hit Karen that ... she would be living EAST of the MISSISSIPPI. A tough moment for a New Mexico and Kansas girl, but she took it in stride.

Our New Pad
Upon our arrival in Boston, we spent 60 days living in the Marriott Residence Inn in Kendall Square. We really enjoyed being able to get around Cambridge so easily, and I also liked the 2-minute walking commute to work. Karen really made the most of her opportunity to learn her way around the city; by the time we left she knew more about getting around Boston than I do.

Max becomes a hotel-dweller. We found some green spots around the hotel and he got a good run-around every day.
Our new friend Andy introduced us to some great parks and sites suitable for the adventures of men and dogs. Those trips were some of the highlights of that November and December. The weather was very mild, as if to break us in gently to our newly-chosen climate.

A New Home
Our time at the Residence Inn comes to an end, and after 2 months of living with only what we could fit in our car, we are moving into our new apartment in Allston. Somehow it took 2 car trips to get everything from the hotel to the apartment, and there was only the tiniest space left in the second trip for Max to squeeze in under the glove box. We almost had to leave him behind...
